As tax season heats up, there are several options available for free tax filing assistance for qualified taxpayers.
Unfortunately, the numbers of taxpayers seeking free tax help also have created new opportunities for con artists and scammers. Some taxpayers have reported receiving offers of free tax assistance via e-mail. The offers vary, but generally ask the taxpayer to provide certain personal information to determine if the taxpayer qualifies for assistance.
To avoid falling prey to these fraudulent offers, taxpayers should research the organization that sent the offer and to never reply to the e-mail offer with personal, tax, or financial information, open attachments, or click on any links.
