Napa Valley famous for ” HUGE PUMPKINS”? No this is not an April fool’s joke from Half Moon Bay, California or the heartlands of Iowa. It is latest crop to come out of the Napa Valley where great soil and near perfect joining conditions prevail.
It has been helped along by the local newspaper, the Napa Valley Register’s 2nd Annual Giant Pumpkin Seed Giveaway. This event has brought the growing of giant pumpkins onto the front page and when searches the newspaper you come up with a page called Pumpkinmania absolutely full of story about growing giant pumpkins and tales about those who do. Another fun story I found here is Local growers want Napa to be the pumpkin capital.
Heck there is even a story in the Register about pumpkin thieves who got away with a 400 pounder, Pumpkin thieves broke my heart. The largest giant pumpkin every grow that I could find on the web was one grow by Chris Stevens at 1,810.5 pounds from giantpumpkin.com.
Here is a good short video showing how this is making the national news from CBS Nes Video called “Pumpkins in Napa Valley” (sorry about the 15 second commercial). It is truly amazing what a world renown name means especially one which is nearly perfect in many ways. Can it be too long when one comes here and overhears someone ask, a glass of PUMPKIN WINE, I don’t know.
